Dr. Klaus Theo Schröder, state secretary at the German Federal Ministry of Health, made it clear during yesterday's 12th Annual Handelsblatt Conference "Pharma 2007" in Frankfurt (Main) that all ongoing assessment procedures of the Institute for Quality and Economy in the Health Care Sector (IQWiG) must be reopened.
Dr. Steffen Wahler, director of health economics at the German Association of Research-based Pharmaceutical Companies (VFA): "As part of the health care reform, the legislature wants to stipulate new benchmarks for the work of the IQWiG. Mandates for the Cologne-based institute include especially the orientation on internationally customary standards, significantly improved work transparency and appropriate patient participation. Effective immediately, all ongoing procedures must follow these requirements. Therefore, we welcome this clarification by State Secretary Schröder."
"Of course, there is also the question, if the IQWiG's contractor - the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) can adhere to decisions that were made without appropriate patient participation during the individual procedural steps," Wahler added.
